Tikkun Olam: Havdallah Meet-Ups

Saturday, March 11 @ 5:00 pm 6:00 pm

Reading Her Story to Understand His Story with Myk Freedman

Weaving community in the cold dark months, we are taking advantage of the skills and curiosities of Temple Israel community for a series of 6 Havdalah Meet-ups.

Myk grew up close to his Romanian grandmother, Lidia.  She survived WWII, with an unusual story that spans five countries. She spoke 7 languages, raised a family and  . . . wrote her entire life story down in a 2000 page manuscript that until this year when Myk tracked it down, no one had ever read.

The book starts in Bessarabia when Lidia is 17, two days before it was taken over by the Soviet Union. It takes the reader back a generation to her mother fleeing from Odessa to Romania, then journeys deep into the Soviet Union, and eventually to Poland, Israel and Canada, capturing an incredibly detailed slice of life in each time and place, down to details of how food was prepared during the harvest in Romania, how nightly interrogations were conducted in Soviet prison, and how the women organized themselves to survive the horrors of Soviet prison.

In this session, Myk will recount some of the unbelievable stories from Lidia’s life as well as her prescient views on politics, feminism and religion.  He’ll then share how his reading of the book has impacted his understanding of himself and his family, and how we, post-diaspora Jews, can look at our past to understand our personal present.

THIS EVENT WILL BE IN PERSON ONLY in the Social Hall. We’ll say havdalah, the blessings that end Shabbat, and engage in great conversations! Light refreshments and snacks provided.
