He is a member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons or ICAN, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017. Helfand was in Oslo for the ceremony. He is also co-present of international Physicians for the prevention of nuclear War. That group, which founded ICAN in 2007, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.
