Join Shirin Morris and Frances Welson for a four week class on the traditional Jewish practice of preparing oneself for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This practice takes place during the Hebrew month of Elul, which begins on August 21 this year. Shirin and Fran will share some techniques that they have learned to assist in this process. Using motifs from Kabbalah, Musar practice, middot (spiritual qualities) and mindfulness meditation, these sessions will enable you to deepen a process of self-awareness and Tikun Olam that you can continue to use through the High Holidays and beyond.
The class will meet for four Thursday evenings starting August 20th, from 7:00pm-8:30pm. We encourage you to choose an Hevruta partner, or "study buddy", and suggest that, in addition to the weekly group Zoom meetings, you talk with your Hevruta once or twice weekly to deepen your practice. Shirin and Fran have been Hevruta partners for many years and have found that this type of study has helped with their inner work and has been deeply fulfilling.
The idea is that, if we take seriously the opportunity to be "sealed in the book of life", that is to be more fully alive as our best selves, it takes on-going work to reach toward that ideal. While we have every opportunity, every day to do this work, the High Holidays are a focused opportunity. The month of Elul is a time to practice and to begin again to take this work into our lives.
The class is free but we ask that, if you are able to make a donation, you do so to support on-going programs at Temple Israel. Suggested donation $10 - $20 or whatever you can afford. Please preregister so that we can send you the Zoom link prior to the first class.
